Learning To Fly

Are you scared of flying? I don’t mean buying a flight ticket and flying to Mallorca on holiday. What I mean is letting yourself go, being free and light as the wind. The most important ability an artist should have? I gave a task to my students to stage a dream. Three of four groups have produced their pieces inspired by the idea of flying in a dream (without being instructed to do so). All three groups created different situations which all led to a ‘flying’ scene where the whole group would be holding and lifting one of the peers up towards the skies. They had a good physical warm up prior to that and being told to be mindful of not getting injured. They all did it with such care and by helping their peer ‘fly’ in the piece, they were naturally learning to fly as well. “A soul in tension that's learning to fly, condition grounded but determined to try” as Gilmore says in his song, as if he is singing about these young people I teach today. And just like that, the rays of Ellen’s refraction prism are turning back to the lecturer, as the students become our teachers reminding us we have the ability to fly too. What a liberating thought!
